If ethereal piano keys, afro-Cuban sounds, shades of classic Brazilian folk, dreamy house, hardware-driven dance music and sultry echoes are your thing then I’ve got you covered.
New music this week from Sam Irl, Arnheim, JSPHYNX, Leonardo Das Cabrio, Pedro Ricardo, New Sector Movements & Allysha Joy, Fly Anakin, tape_hiss, Skinny Pelembe, and Megatronic & Ed Seven aka SMTHNG SMTIME.
Remixes by Fred P for Gianluca Peterella and Nicola Conte, JD. Reid for Ebi Soda, Ron Trent for Sïana, and Salamanda for Anchorsong. Plus Ezra Collective’s superb take on Fela Kuti & Afrika 70’s jam Lady.
For the last hour and a half of the show you’ll hear a number of records that I picked up last week in New York City while I was in town for this year’s Winter Jazz Fest. Stopped by Human Head Records in Brooklyn and A1 Records in Manhattan this time around, and left a very happy camper. I didn’t get to play everything that I had in my bag for this episode, but selections from Vi Redd, Paul Bley, Yusef Lateef, Young-Holt Unlimited, George Duke, and Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson made their way on to the airwaves. My goal is to play the rest of the LPs on the show next week.
Another LP you’ll hear on this week’s show is one from Jon Hendricks, and what makes that special is that Gilles Peterson himself actually handed me the record ‘Tell Me the Truth’ in the middle of his set at Nublu on opening night if Winter Jazz Fest. Here’s me in full on cheese mode with GP at the end of his extended set around 4:00a when the lights came on…
On my Substack post last week about episode 1,240 I was telling you how things were back to ‘normal’ since I played my normal fifty songs over the course of four hours. Here we are this week back to just under forty songs, with some exceptionally long numbers by Andrew Hill, Roscoe Mitchell, and Archie Shepp that really stand out.
